Barbara Quinn Sculark Obituary

Obituary of A Preacher's Daughter

Barbara Nell was born in Tallahatchie County to her parents, Rev. Sam Quinn Sr and Mrs. Bettie Lou Small Quinn on February 18, 1941. She was the epitome of beauty inside and out. She had a unique personality with a heart of gold. She was born into a family of four siblings, one sister and two brothers. Barbara accepted Christ at a young age at St. John Baptist Church, Blue Lake MS.

She was educated in the Tallahatchie County School System and in 1958 she graduated from West District High School in Sumner, MS. She continued her education at Coahoma Junior College and her motto to her children was "You can select any school of your choice but you must give Coahoma Junior College your first two years." Receiving a college education was mandatory for her children and they made her proud by graduating from CJC and beyond.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to the Late LA Sculark Sr in 1959 and to this union were their children, Mary Emma, Brendalyn Louise, Gwendolyn Denise, Carolyn Rena', Lawrence Arthur, Jr, Samuel Dewayne and Roosevelt Demetria. She was affectionately called "Nell" by her parents and siblings and "Bobbie Nell" by her family and special friends.

She was a God-Fearing woman who was raised in the church by her parents whose father was a Baptist Preacher and her mother served as a First Lady. Barbara had a deep fellowship, love and respect for God Almighty. She continued this passage of service with her own seven children by taking them to church. She never left her children at home on Sunday mornings, nights, rainy days, hot days or cold days. They were right there with her singing and praising God. It was mandatory that her children study their Sunday School lesson on Saturday's to be prepared to either teach the lesson and or participate in the lesson.

Barbara was a musician (a pianist) for many churches for over 30 years (Zion Travelers Church & Humble Chapel Church in Farrell, MS, Old Antioch Church, Sumner, MS, and New Morning Star Church Clarksdale, MS Being a preacher's daughter was a title she wore with esteem privilege and oh how well she could SANG and not just SING. She could sing with that big powerhouse soprano voice like Great gospel singers Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood and Dottie Peebles, just to name a few.

Her father was the pastor of four churches and countless of members were baptized, saved, and blessed and Barbara was right there with him singing and praising God alongside her mother. Barbara drove her father, mother and children to all of her father's churches. She packed her entire family in a '66 baby blue Ford Farland car like a football team and no one could say "get off of me". On first Sunday's she drove the family to Mt. Avery in Friars Point. Some of those families were Charlie Henderson and children, The Praters, The Pollards, The Griffins, Eve and Mother Foster, The Silkets, Marvin Myles and the late Nathaniel "Chuck Pollard" who loved her father immensely. On second Sunday's she drove her family to Mt. Zion M. B. in Clayton MS. Some of those families were Mr. & Mrs. James and Dorothy Dunn who were dedicated and committed to Barbara and her father beyond measure and Mrs. Nina Smith. On Third Sunday's she drove her family to Powell Chapel M. B. Church in Glendora, MS. Some of those families were The Fondrens, The Mclntrye's, Georgella Alexander, Marsha Grant and the late mother Pete. Finally, on fourth Sunday's, the family home church, Barbara drove them to Mt. Pisgah M. B. Church in Stovall, MS. Some of those families were The Wide family, The Rucker's, The Stewarts, The Stokes, The Clarks, Sadie & Laura Carter and The White family.

Her dad would always make a request for his daughter to sing (with that big powerhouse voice) his favorite songs & hymns as well as the Baptist Hymn of Preparation "Amazing Grace." During pastor anniversaries, Barbara would cook boxes and boxes of delicious food to carry to the various churches and oh how the members would look forward to eating her fried chicken, dressing, sweet potato pies, greens, beans, peas and cornbread. Oh yes, Barbara could have put many companies out of business who made biscuits.

After much soul searching, conversations with her children and praying to God, the Holy Spirit moved in her life again. On February 11, 2011, she joined Liberty Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Robert D. Walker, Sr. to be with her children and grandchildren.
