Marjorie Brown Obituary

Marjorie (Stanton) Brown, known by her family as “Margie,” triumphantly entered her heavenly home on December 30, 2023 at the age of 81.  Marjorie was born on December 30, 1942 to LZ and Lovie Mae (Hamilton) Stanton.  Of their 14 children, Marjorie was number six and the first to be born on the family’s farm in Rena Lara, Mississippi (MS).  She joined the Church of Christ Holiness, USA in Clarksdale, MS at an early age and received a solid Christian foundation.

After graduating from the 9th grade at Sherard Elementary, Marjorie Stanton attended Coahoma Agricultural High School.  There she sang in the choir and later met Jimmie Lee Brown.   She graduated from Coahoma Agricultural High School in the Spring of 1961 and enrolled at Coahoma Jr. College during the Fall Semester.  In 1962, Marjorie married Jimmie at her parents’ home.  To them were born their first child, Angela Zenobia on December 23, 1962; and two years later (June 26, 1964), Jimmie, Jr. was born.

Marjorie was determined to raise their two children, as well as demonstrate to them the value of education. Thus, she charged forward to accomplish her goal to become a teacher.  First, she completed the two-year program at Coahoma Jr. College in Clarksdale, MS and then transferred to Rust College in Holly Springs, MS, where she received her bachelor’s degree.   Marjorie became an elementary school teacher of math, English, computers, and other subjects.   While raising and providing for their children and grandchildren and holding down a full-time job, she decided to pursue a master’s degree, which she received from Valley State University in Itta Bena, MS.

For many years, Marjorie helped to influence and shape the lives of the children she taught, while raising her own daughter and son, as well as her daughter’s three children: Sheena, Brittany, and Bakari Brown.  Additionally, she helped to raise her great grandson, Kaden, and spent time enjoying Bakari’s son and baby girl.

For more than 30 years, Marjorie Brown taught in various school districts in and around Bolivar and Coahoma County, MS.  During that time, she became an active member of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksdale where she and her husband and great grandson, Kaden, attend.  Marjorie was a thoughtful, loving, and hardworking wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.  Her kind spirit will be held closely in our memories.

Visitation will be Friday January 12, 2024 from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM at Royal Funeral Home.  The Celebration of Life will be Saturday January 13, 2024, 11:00 AM, at New Covenant MB Church.  Rev. Kenneth Gooden will be officiating.  Burial will follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.

Marjorie Stanton-Brown is preceded in death by her son, Jimmie Lee Brown, Jr. (1964-2021), her parents (LZ and Lovie Stanton); and seven siblings (Baby Boy Stanton; Boston Henry, Sr.; LZ, Jr.; Larry Dale; Virgie Lewis (Willie); June Geneva Harvey; and Aubrey.

She leaves to cherish her memory:   Her husband of 61 years, Jimmie Lee Brown, Sr.; daughter: Angela Brown; grandchildren:  LaShara Thomas-Williams, Jalani Henderson, Jabarri Henderson, Tremell Henderson, Sheena Brown, Brittany Brown, and Bakari Brown; and great grandchildren: Kaden Brown, Brentley Brown, and Ashanti Brown.  She also leaves to cherish her two sisters: Cheryl Stanton of Clarksdale, MS and Dr. Marion (John) Webb of Cleveland, OH; four brothers: Curtis (Essie) Stanton of Rena Lara, MS; Cornelious (Willie Ann) Stanton of Dallas, TX; Ernest (Deborah) Stanton of Jackson, MS; and Bishop Dr. Arnold (Pastor Lillie) Stanton of Byram, MS.  Others who will miss Marjorie include a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, church members, and sorority sisters.
