Minnie Raggs Phillips Melton, 68 of Clarksdale , MS passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at home. Minnie was born May 2, 1951 to the loving parents Fred and Ruby McWright Raggs in Leland , MS.
Minnie graduated from Lincoln Attendance Center with the class of 1969. There she stood proudly in many activities with her classmates. The class song she forever remembered, “ Oh Lincoln, Our Love Is For You”. Minnie and a classmate, Howard White were given the privilege of writing the song.
After graduation Minnie married the love of her life, Elijah Phillips. Upon this family unit two children made it complete. They lived in Greenville, MS for many years, until they later relocated to Memphis, TN where many friends were bonded. Sadly, their marital ties ended but their friendship continued. She later relocated to Detroit, MI. where she met and married Gilbert Melton. Minnie was an avid interior decorator.
She later set her mind on nursing, there in turn sought her degree. She became a nurse for over 20 years. Her health began to fail, and she longed to be near family. Her heart moved her to move back home in 2012.
Visitation will be Friday, January 17, 2020 from 1:00 pm- 6:30 pm at Royal Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life will be Saturday January 18, 2020 at 11:00 am at Balls Temple A.M.E. Church, 326 Kentucky St., Greenville, MS. 38701. The body will lie in state from 10:00am to 11:00am on Saturday morning.
Rev. Cedell Raggs, eulogist, and Rev. Frederick Clayton, pastor. Burial will follow at the Bogue Memorial Garden in Leland, MS.
Minnie was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Melton, her parents, Ruby and Fred Raggs , one brother, M C Raggs and one sister, Velma Kingdom.
Minnie leaves to cherish her memories, two sons, Darryl (Lula) Phillips, of Cordova, TN. Kendrick Phillips of Louisville, TX. Two brothers of Clarksdale, MS. Rev. Cedell (Gloria) Raggs and Rev. Fred (Ophelia) Raggs. Three sisters, Rev. Ruby (John) Davidson of Vardaman, MS, Linda (Leroy) Broom of Fayetteville, NC and Joan Thomas(Alvin) Wallace of Landover, MD. Three grandchildren, Ladarrius Blue and Darmisha Blue of Cordova, TN and Kendrick Phillips II of Louisville, TX. Two great- grands, Darkira Blue and Major Blue. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
