Mrs. Theresa Thompson-Green was born on February 7, 1917 to the late Walter Thompson and Dora Robinson-Thompson in Newton, Mississippi.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, parents, Siblings; Johnny and Geneva, sons; Eugene and Larry, several nieces and nephews, family and friend whose lives she greatly impacted.
On May 28, 1938, she married J. D. Green to this union no biological children were born but they legally adopted three children. She played a large role in rearing Ruby Roberts. Although she only had three children in her home she was a mother to many children in the community.
As with many black families she was not able to receive a higher education but had to quit school to work and help the family to make ends meet.
She moved to Chicago, Illinois and while living there she co-founded the New Evangelical Non Denominational Church, which was started in her basement with her husband, J. D. Green and Elder Willie Sams. Her great niece, Ruby Roberts and daughter Dot were the choir members often singing the song, “I cried and I cried,” as small children.
Mrs. Green accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, was baptized and became a member of the Corinth Missionary Baptist Church. She served in many capacities at the church such as President of the Missionary Board, Sunday school teacher, Bible class teacher and church treasurer. She served as a member of the NAACP in her community and worked with the polls.
She and her husband J. D. owned and operated Progressive Funeral Home in Newton, Mississippi for many years in her community. She was known as Aunt T on the hill across from the funeral home. It did not matter if she was babysitting, if her services were needed, she was coming, kids in the hearse and all.
Visitation will be Friday September 10, 2020 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Royal Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Saturday September 12, 2020, 12:00 PM, at Greater Corinth MB Church, 232 Corinth Road, Newton, MS 39345.
She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy, one daughter, Dorotha (Lacy) Harrell of Clarksdale, Mississippi, ten grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephew’s cousins, other family and friends to carry on her legacy.
